2009 Alliance for Children and Families' Civic Engagement Partners

Community Leadership

$35,000 over three years to support organizations’ robust and sustained community civic engagement efforts. 

Family & Children's Place (Louisville, KY)

Civic engagement initiative that seeks to build upon HazelwoodMiddle School’s current after school program to engage parents and youth in community involvement activities and civic projects. 

Family & Children’s Service (Minneapolis, MN)

Civic engagement initiative to connect families to resources produced by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). 

Family Service Association (Dayton, OH)

Program carried out through the Neighborhood Development Program in East Dayton’s Newcome Plain Neighborhood designed to engage and motivate families and residents to take renewed ownership and pride in their community by encouraging engagement in the goal setting of plans for positive improvements and change. 


 

New Voices at the Civic Table

$5,600 over one year to provide general support to organizations’ new initiatives to facilitate client civic engagement. 

Auberle (McKeesport, PA)

Program to help youth in residential and community programs and their primary caregivers engage in activities at the state and local level that will impact legislative decision making regarding services offered to Pennsylvania children. 

Child Care Association of Illinois (Springfield, IL)

Program will work with foster parents, helping to bring their voices to the civic table and increase the voice of foster parents within the state policy and budget processes. 

Children & Families First (Wilmington, DE)

Advocacy and engagement program will provide training for clients and the implementation of program-specific Advisory Committees.

Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies (Wethersfield, CT)

Creation of the Citizen Advocate program that will train and assist Citizen Advocates to effectively advocate for the interests of their families and communities and serve as positive role models for their neighbors . 

Family & Youth Counseling Agency (Lake Charles, LA)

The LeadershipCenter for Youth will promote civic engagement and youth leadership development through a youth forum that will focus on increasing young people’s understanding of mission-based advocacy and the legislative process. 

La Casa De Esperanza (Waukesha, WI)

Civic engagement program will broaden civic engagement of participants through education that increases civic engagement and voter knowledge of the issues, candidates, and the democratic process. 

Methodist Youth Services, Inc (Chicago, IL)

MYS will support and empower youth who were removed by the child welfare/juvenile justice system to become community leaders of tomorrow by educating them on political advocacy, voting, and the importance of community services. 

Partnership for Strong Families (Gainesville, FL)

Creation of a community advisory council (CAC) that will develop action plans to improve outcomes for children, families, and the community

YWCA of Oahu (Honolulu, HI) 

Youth Leadership Network will enable young people to stay involved with the YWCA in order to expand their community involvement and further develop civic engagement skills. 

  

National Family Week

$2,000 to support planning and implementing 2009 National Family Week community forums that engage clients and community residents. 

ChristianHome Association-Children's Square USA (Council Bluffs, IA)

Community action forum Legislative Breakfast that will include an open question and answer session with the elected officials.  

Family Services of Montgomery County (Eagleville, PA)

Community engagement forum to convene a community-wide mini-conference for professionals and consumers on Latinos and family health care issues. 

Family Service of RoanokeValley (Roanoke, VA)

Community education forum to obtain input from consumers regarding what the community needs to do differently to more effectively partner with families. 

Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois (River Forest, IL)

Community education forum supporting families with teens who have entered the juvenile justice or criminal system. 

Newark Emergency Services for Families, Inc (Newark, NJ)

Community engagement forum workshop to provide parents and caregivers linkage to social services, specifically in the area of health, nutrition and social skill development.
