The Alliance for Children and Families and its member organizations are again making the call for civic action. The 2009 election season is already underway; and with the uneasy state of the economy, job market, and housing market, voters have many issues to address at the polls. The mayoral races will impact dozens of Alliance member organizations and the communities they serve. New York City, Los Angeles, Cleveland, and 600 other cities large and small across America will be holding mayoral elections.
Alliance members are not new to this civic action; in fact, leading up to Election Day Nov. 4, 2008, a number of members played a vital role in energizing communities once thought to be politically unimportant. The PewCenter on the States in its report, Election Preview 2008: What if We Held an Election and Everyone Came?, stated that the 2008 elections saw the most ballots cast in U.S. history. This historic turnout can be attributed to increased voter registration and voter education programs, including programs launched by Alliance members, many of which were involved with the Alliance’s Civic Engagement program.
